Starting Development

First Design Ideas - DISCOUNT TYRES UK

Here is the starting process of my designs. You can see from the images shown how I have experimented with different shape and styles to get a full view of the possible directions I could take my project.

In these images here you can see y examination of designs of the circular form, representing a tyre in a somewhat similar feature from 'black circles' logo
You can also see the different variations of text layout and image scaling I have worked through.

Here is a combination of my above ideas where I have places a banner shape over a diamond with the use of bold text and tyre silhouette. My initial ideas here reflect the kwikfit logo and it's almost 'arrow' like shape, giving me my idea for my arrow styles banner.

Here is an isolated close up of the banner

Here is a refinement of my arrow styled banner. Here you can definitely see my reference to kwikfit. I started out sketching a single triangular shape, also similar to hankooks approach - I'm attempt to create a simple shape which the company could be represented by. You can see from left to right my ideas forming as I experiment with the use of two shapes and then again in a bold solid colour.

Here is an example of the application of my arrow shape with a titling text, similar to the logo the company currently use - a bold and simple title. You can see my variations with colour, position and amount. I like this idea but doubt it would appear professional to an audience.

PHOTOGRAPHY

DISCOUNT TYRES UK - Photography

In gathering some Primary sources, to work from in my design, i had the idea of taking a series of photographs which i can reflect back into my work. I took photos from a variety of angles and on many different stages of a mechanics typical jobs and routine. From these photos i plan to examine the different shapes, colours and imagery found relatable to a garage.

Below is a refined collection of photographs.

Research - Previous Company Designs

Below are a collection of existing products which DISCOUNT TYRES UK use for their companies branding, It is my intention to analyse these products and see how my own ideas can improve their company.

Here is an example of an old logo used in some of the companies advertisements. I particularly like the BOLD text with its interesting use of font and 3d bevels, creating a hardened and metallic look which would be suitable for my own compositions.

Here is an example of the logo and title the company use. It's sleek and simplistic and appearance. The simple use of font called 'night wraith' is hardened like the image seen above. I like This approach as feel a similar use of bold black text could be used in my own work.

Here is a screenshot of the Michelin man seen on the companies website. I have chosen to reflect on this as it shows how different companies are able to advertise by using other companies logos. I also like the fact that a company is able to make such an appealing and well known characterisation for their company, which can become so iconic.

Here is an example of the companies business card. This gives me an insight for possible products I could create and also a suitable amount of information that must be included on it. I also find the choose of colours of interested being red and white, showing a common house scheme for the company which I feel I will have to change. My current ideas are Rees, whites, blacks, blues and creams.

Here is another existing product, being a Billboard. This also adds to the possible outcomes I could create. I like the choice of bold powerful text as this will help reflect my own work when in the design process. Bold text has became present in all of the pieces I have examined so feel this should definitely be included in my own work. This piece also gives me another form of product I could create.

Relevant Designs - Existing Motor Products

Here are some examples of designs from companies of a similar market. I am currently drawn to the different uses of shapes and imagery used within each different logo. From the logos seen above you can see how each company has created its own IMAGE or ICON for all of their company to be recognised by. I particularly like the logo for Kwikfit, with its bold use of colour and shape (arrow shape). I also like some of the smaller icons seen in the work of Hankook and Black circle, especially with Black Circles ironic use of a black circle to represent a tyre. I also like the small characterisation created in the Michelin logo with their iconic figure. The michelin man.

In the image seen above you can see a collection of Hankook and Bridgestone Posters. In the Hankook poster i perticularly like the layout of both photography and logo layout. I also like the use of Bridgestone posters with the same design and various colours changing in each one. I feel that these designs would reflect well if i chose to create posters.

In the two images seen above you you can see a variety of layouts for both advertisment posters and a booklet (seen in the top image) I felt it would be relevant using these pieces as they vary from the other poster examples i have seen above. I like the arrangement of information and the use of illustrative imagery, also seen in the booklet above.

New A2 Unit 3 Design Brief

Travel
A2 Design Brief

For this project I am going to focus on the Business side to the theme of Travel, using my illustration skills to rebrand and design a local business known as ‘Addison Tyre Centre’ which are a company specialising in Tyres and other Travel oriented products, all in aid of assisting transport. I also have the benefit of a diverse choice of title, as the company itself uses ‘Discount Tyres UK’ as a trade name.

I have chosen my Digital design skills from previous projects to continue with development and refining, as they were overall far superior to my other mediums. I have also took a greater interest in to sketching ad lino printing as I feel these skills could be linked into my Digital work for a more complex series of overall more sophisticated designs.

My designs are to be aimed at the general public, who drive, making my work more obvious and relevant. With this in mind it is essential that my designs are easily legible and the use of shape and colour is relevant and appealing to the entire audience, which has a spread of ages.

Regarding research I am going to investigate the branding and choice of designs on the current design of ‘Addison Tyre Centre’ and also look closely at other Tyre Centres and companies such as Kwik fit, Black Circles, Bridgestone, Michelin, Hankook.

Throughout research on branding I have found the work of ‘Hovercraft’ to be inspiring with the interest of shape, layout and the universal boundaries of how one design can be applied to many different products. I have also looked at the work of Sophie Buckland who is a more artistic reference for my project. I feel her work may be of great creative influence especially with packaging.

I am going to focus on using my Digital skills, as here is where I am able to have the most creative control over my designs. I also plan to involve the use of lino printing, being something I have keep interest in and feel it would merge together well with digital media. Sketches and drawings in both pen and pencil will be included as I use them for planning out and ideas, which I can then develop.

I am considering and complete rebranding of ‘Addison Tyre Centre’ including logos and use of colour (primary theme). I will also advance this with a range of typical products and related items such as packaging, posters, display boards, banners, signs, coffee cups, business cards, flyers, leaflets, websites, mobile Apps.
