Critical Appraisal - Week Two

This week we discussed 'MIX IT UP'
I have followed advise from last week and used my previous targets in my most recent project.

This weeks aims are:
1. Use more annotation.
2. Look closer at the involvement of Road Signs.
3. Carry on idea of Banners

Task Two - MIX IT UP

This weeks task was called 'MIX IT UP'
This task included exploration with colour and pattern, regarding this i feel i have met all requirements.

Below is a some Typography i have attempted, using a black fine liner pen repeating the word 'TRAVEL' in multiple styles. I have also attempted recreating my own text with masking tape.

Below is a photo taken from my sketch book where i have created my own font with the grouping of abstract vector shapes such as Spirals and Circles etc. I tested out its appearance on inverted Black and white backgrounds and below also added colour and gradients to each vector.

Here are a select few experiments with font. At the top of the page you can see my comparison with font and colour and how i can make certain clashing colour combinations go together nicely. There are also some halftone styled text on the bottom of the page with both digital and hand drawn application. I have also reflected my previous task of scale and proportion and also symbolising my capital T being the main item of the design.

I have looked at the idea of 'Banners' to present my font in a new and visually pleasing way. i am also pleased with my choice in colour from both pictures seen below as they all seem to work perfectly together to make the title stand out. Also note that the lower image is a continued refinement of the colour/font comparison seen in the above work

My banner interest has taken a different approach in the work seen below keeping it more controlled with limited 'Flow' creating a more Business and formal approach

Critical Appraisal - Week One

This week in my Working Groups i have discussed the work from Task One and my plans for my future project. I have also took inspiration from the other members of my group after seeing their work and their style of taking on the task requirements.

This weeks aims are:
1. Addition of Colour.
2. Experiment further with fonts and shapes.

Task One - SCALE AND PROPORTION

I began experimenting the requirements of this task by exploring different and inventive ways of 'SCALE AND PROPORTION'. I simpled down my work title to 'Travel' being shorter and simpler to experiment with that 'National Express'

Here i have focused on an experimental view of hand drawn fonts, changing the positioning and size of each letter. There is also a rather sublime attempt at proportions, with the mixture of a road sign shaped background and an abstract road shape traveling through the design.

Below you will see my experiment of 'Containing' my fonts and titles within n different 'shapes and windows'

Below is an example of refining my 'Contained' text idea keeping my ideas simple. You can see how i have explored the arrangement and scale of each letters and how i have made the 'T' significant. I have also touched on using Road signs to engage my text and replace the 'T' letter with a Road symbol.

Here is an example of experimenting with my choice of font. I have selected a few interesting directions i could take my title and laid them out in comparison. I have also refined my 'Road sign' concept, drawing out and experimenting with replacing my text completely.
