Billboards - Photoshop

To conclude my project i decided to photograph existing billboards and photoshop my final outcomes onto them.

Here are my outcomes.

Original photos / boards

Final Billboard

Here are my four favourite boards

Billboard

The next step on my products, took me into designing a Billboard.

In current times there has been a big popularity of Virgin Medias
new line of Advertisement, featuring Usain Bolt and Mo Farah, both
olympic gold medalists.

Some of the notorious features in these adverts are:
-The whitty tag line and use of Puns
      “Cant say Farah than that”
-The use of cut out images in responce to the boards topic.
-The similar use of RED, as featured in my own products.

From researching Virgin Media Billboards this gave me the inspiration
to start designing my own Billboard.

I then began my process of construction.

I started off creating a large Landscape artboard
and filling it a solid Red, the same seen in my previous
work.

I took note of the structure of text logo and imagey
on the board seen above. I recreated this adding two
thin lines and another smaller line ‘dotted’ keeping
my RETRO theme of design.

The next step was to add my text to the board.
I found the use of a new font called ‘Amatic Bold’
being simple and giving an almost ‘hand made’ feature
which i felt reflected the ‘Family business’ i am
designing for.

I added the company web address and began the
addition of my Mechanic Puns. This one being the
use of TYRE’d to replace the correct spelling TIRED

Now with my board beginning to take shape i
added my logo to the bottom left corner.

This is of similar structure to the Virgin Board.

As an addition to the boards structure i added a
cream boarder to keep in with previously made
products eg. the business card.

The addition of this makes the board feel less plain.

List of Tag Lines (Puns):
-Tyre’d of shopping around?
-Wheel’ie cheap prices
-Feeling the Pressure?
-Exhausted of shopping around?

Experimental Bill boards

Upon research of tyre related advertisments and compositions i found two very interesting and influential examples which have lead me down a route of experimentation and refinement of my existing designs.

Using the board displayed on the left, i have adapted the tyre tread
created and similarly used in my Envelop.
This was all influenced by the work of Kristaps Eberlins, an illustrator
from Latvia, whose uses tyre trad illustrations sprawled across his
digital image to create an almost ‘Fractal’ appearance, which is also
present in background of the Virgin Media Board, which i am also keen
on referencing.

In this close up of the Virgin Media board you can see the subtle fractal effect of the shades
of red. My current idea is to recreate this interesting pattern with the arrangement of tyre
treads similar to Eberlins work.

Experimenting with the position, direction amd opacity. Also notie as the image progresses
from bottom to top each tyre shape begins to gradually fade out. Also notice difference of
scale and diagonal positioning.

A further experiment into the positioning and direction of line, as
reflected in Eberlins work seen above. Also focus on the different scales.
An alternative look on line and positioning. Here i have used the tyre
to emphasis the presence of line in the original design.

The thread line along the bottom of my bill board was also inspired by this piece of work, which is a tyre safety poster created by Monarch Automotives.

The interesting use of the tyre tread shape shaping the bottom section of the board.

In this example from bottom to top the three lines present in the design,
range from 100, 60 and 20 opacity giving and overall fade.
In this image the two lines seen below are faded out where as the
higher dotted line is a stronger more visible opacity

On the next step of inspiration from this source, i took the involvement of the Tyre Shape into my design. Using a segment of the Tyre, which i originally made for my logo, and placing it along the bottom of the board.

I also investigated other aspects of the source, one being the involvement of the twenty pence coin found present in the centre of the tread, used in a form of symbolism. I replaced this for my Retro logo, as seen in the example to the left

I have also noticed the Arrangement of Text in my source and how it progressed from BOLD to thin as the composition falls downwards. These examples are how i have interpreted this. A thing to point out is that in my current design i have an arrangement where the text goes BIG, SMALL and MEDIUM showing a progressive flow and used in the case of separating information.

Envelope

Now with my Letter Head finalised it seems only right
to create a suitable Envelope to put it in. So i set out
on the challenge to create an envelope both
visually stunning and well thought of.

I started off creating my own Net, being purely original.
I then planned the possibility of having a form of
decoration on the inside to make my envelope far
more interesting and professional.

After making examples of this envelope and testing its accessibility by placing a letter head inside of it, i have gradually altered my Net.

On the next step to altering my NET i thoughout about a
RETRO way of reusing a traditional method of a SEAL.
So i sourced this image online and adapted the idea of using
my logo as a ‘sticker’ to bind the folds of the envelope
together.

I decided to change the inside colour to dark red (as seen in
my logo) i also added a cut away to the inside of my envelope,
similar to the cut away seen in my business card holder,
giving the same effect being able to get my letter in and out
easily.

With the colour on my NET displayed above i noticed the
outside of my envelope was left plain and was also
considerably tedious to print  the customers name and
address on, so i came up with printing this small tag to
attach to the front. I kept a common font used on my
letter head and also kept an occurring use of the Dotted
RETRO lines and RED colours

FINAL OUTCOMES

Letter Heads

After exploring with Embossing techniques i decided to explore its modern
day uses, a popular one being ‘Letter Heads’, used in business letters.

These are the three variations i came up with
keeping similar connections with my other products
and designs.

Notice the recurring red and cream strips appearing
throughout all my experiments and the use of
banners. I have also added dotted lines, seen within
my previous designs including my logo (also featured)
to keep a common RETRO theme.

I have also left the possibility of apply EMBOSSING
to several sections of each Letter head, to keep my
designs open to manipulation.

Final Letter Head

Here you can see my final design of my
letter head. i have also added graphical
type (random text) to give me the
impression of what it will look like
with real text added.

The design is conventional and creative
with its use of colour and interesting
arrangement of illustration.

(In my sketch book i have attached a version of this letter head with embossing)
